Social housing provider, Bromsgrove District Housing Trust (bdht) is continuing to go from strength-to-strength with a duo of appointments to its growing independent living team.

Chelsey Kaye, formally part of the customer first team at bdht has joined the independent living department which supports bdht customers in sheltered living accommodation. The role entails supporting residents with daily tasks including making a doctor’s appointment, paying bills, claiming benefits as well as regular welfare checks to ensure people are managing day to day life as autonomously as possible.

Chelsey Kaye, Independent Living Officer said: “I have always been a people person and in my previous role I was constantly behind a screen which felt like a barrier. I am really enjoying being part of the independent living team, meeting people, and supporting customers with day-to-day tasks.

“No two days are ever the same which is great, one customer might need help setting up a direct debit order, while another could be looking for a suggestion of where to meet up with friends for a walk to get a little exercise and have a chat, there is always something new to do.

“Loneliness is a real issue for many of our customers with mobility and mental health issues, and a visit from one of the team can really make a difference. Our aim is to help give our customers the support they need to live independently, and offer help where needed so they can live a full and happy life.”

Jamie Donnelly who also joins the independent living team as an officer added: “I decided to study psychology when I grew up supporting family members with mental health issues. I always wanted to help people reach their full potential no matter what their circumstances were.

“My previous roles have all included working one to one with people who have learning difficulties and mental health challenges. By working with the independent living team at bdht, I am able to support a much bigger group of people every day who have a range of diverse needs. Assisting these customers is a real privilege.

“Both Chelsey and I are excited about joining the independent living team and look forward to helping to make a real difference to the people in our community.”
